Mozzarella in a carriage

Mozzarella in a carriage is a very simple and delicious Italian snack in the form of a small sandwich. The "carriage" for mozzarella is bread. Actually, bread and mozzarella are the main ingredients of this dish, and as additional you can use any fillers that are combined with this cream cheese. We propose to cook mozzarella in carrozza in the version in which it is prepared in Rome - with anchovies.

Mozzarella in a carriage
Ingredients
  • 2 fillets of anchovies
  • 4 slices of sandwich bread
  • 2 mozzarella balls 125 g each
  • 4 sprigs of basil
  • 1 egg
  • flour for breading
  • odorless vegetable oil for frying

STEP-BY-STEP COOKING RECIPE

Step 1
Cut the anchovy fillet into 4 pieces and place on 2 slices of bread so that the crusts are free.
Step 2
Cut the mozzarella into slices and place on top of the anchovies. Top with a couple of basil leaves.
Step 3
Place a slice of bread on top, press down to make the sandwich firm, and carefully cut off the crusts.
Step 4
Place 3 shallow bowls next to each other: whisk an egg in one, add flour in the second, and breadcrumbs in the third.
Step 5
Heat the deep-frying oil to about 170 ° C. You can check the temperature without a thermometer: if you throw a piece of bread into the butter and it immediately starts to sizzle and brown in a couple of minutes, then the butter is warmed up enough.
Step 6
Dip the sandwiches first in flour, then in an egg, then in breadcrumbs.
Step 7
After shaking off any excess, put the sandwiches in the heated oil and fry for 5 minutes on one side. Then turn over and fry for another 5 minutes. Pat dry the sandwiches on a paper towel to remove excess oil. Serve immediately.
