Serve hot or chilled with butter or cream cheese, salted salmon slices, ham, or chunks of cold roast beef. Bagels with sweet fillings are just as good: add your favorite jam, cottage cheese, honey or chocolate spread to them.
Ingredients
- 7 g active dry yeast
- 500 g flour
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 1.5 tsp salt
- 250 ml water
- 1 yolk
- olive oil
- poppy seeds, sesame seeds or coarse salt for sprinkling
STEP-BY-STEP COOKING RECIPE
Step 1
Stir yeast with 50 ml warm water, add 2 tbsp. l. flour, 2 tbsp. l. sugar and leave for 15 minutes. Sift flour and salt into a large bowl and make a depression in the center. Pour in the diluted yeast and 200 ml of water and begin kneading the dough with a fork. Then knead the dough well with your hands, 10 minutes. If it sticks to your hands, add a little flour.
Step 2
Grease a bowl with butter, transfer the dough into it, brush it on all sides with olive oil, cover with cling film and leave for 1 hour until it doubles in volume.
Step 3
Place the dough on a floured table, knead for 5 minutes.
Step 4
Divide the dough into 10-12 balls, 5-7 cm in diameter, make a hole in each ball. Cover the balls with a linen napkin and let sit for 30 minutes until they increase in size.
Step 5
Whisk the yolk with 1 tbsp. l. warm water. Grease a baking sheet with butter and lightly dust with flour. Preheat oven to 190 ° C. Simultaneously put a pot of boiling water on the fire, add 2 tbsp. l. sugar and reduce heat.
Step 6
Place several bagels in boiling water so that they fit in a single row in the pot. Simmer at low boil for 8 minutes. Remove them from the water with a slotted spoon or small sieve, let the water drain and place on a baking sheet.
Step 7
Brush the bagels with yolk, sprinkle with poppy seeds, sesame seeds or coarse salt. Bake in the oven for 25-30 minutes.
